Agencies selling usage rights on my behalf

Agencies have represented work since the first images, with royalties paid on a per publication basis, through royalty free CDs to online microstock licensing.

RIGHTS PROTECTED

The agencies originally sold exclusive or non-exclusive rights on a per use of image basis. This was when images were on slides, and the original transparency was requested.

ROYATY FREE RIGHTS

With everything becoming digital, the Royalty Free licensing method became popular and images were often sold as a CD with a package of images that could be used as many times for a fixed price.

STOCK BUYOUTS

The agencies moved to purchasing all rights outright to better manage the sales for Royalty Free licensing. This lead to commissions of images their photo and video libraries were missing.

GETTY IMAGES

Becoming a Getty images photographer was through mergers and acquisitions as the world’s leading agency bought up the collections of their competition.

JUPITER IMAGES

Buyout and commissions for Jupiter Images in New York.

They purchased all rights to previously shot stock images of a wide variety of subjects: skiing, landscapes, action sports, travel, etc…

Jupiter commissioned monthly shoots for action and healthy lifestyle shoots from white water rafting, rock climbing to biking in the park or commuting to work. Images even included riding roller coasters.

The images were part of their Thinkstock royalty Free collections. Jupiter as bought and merged with Getty Images in 2008.
